IT’S THE LAW (10/29/2024)

The UK introduced the Data (Use and Access) Bill to regulate how personal data may be used and shared and to help individuals and businesses securely access services with enhanced privacy protection. The new Office for Digital Identities and Attributes (OfDIA) will create a government certified “trust mark” to indicate verification has been granted.

Covert tracking – no problem for LocationX, a big one for us

Little-known US tech company Babel Street has a shadowy platform, LocationX, which can scarily select an area around any designated location in the world, identify mobile devices coming in and out of that area, and see where they’re going. Think health or abortion clinics, political rallies, religious sites, government offices or police stations and why the ability to follow those who have been there is a privacy nightmare. Atlas Data Privacy Corporation filed a lawsuit against the company for warrantless surveillance.

Children’s Privacy: Nudity-reporting feature added to iMessage for kids

Now beta testing in Australia (because it has new, stricter child abuse laws), Apple’s new iMessage feature provides children with a warning when inappropriate images or video are detected being received or sent. This includes messages received via iMessage, AirDrop, FaceTime and Photos and provides users with a message asking, ‘Do you want to report this’ and the ability to alert Apple.
